Many travelers judge an Alaska Inside Passage Cruise to be one of the best in the world! We agree and were smitten by this experience so much that we have returned on a number of occasions in slightly varied ways to re-live aspects of our initial experience. These are the main reasons for our return for more of the best!
The scenery from an Alaska Inside Passage cruise ship is breathtaking! Spectacular rugged cliffs, fjords and amazing glaciers characterize this coastline. The ever changing nature of this scenery keeps most travelers on the deck or in viewing lounges with their binocular in hand! The lush green of the southern part of this route in British Columbia is replaced with more snow capped peaks and close up glaciers as you head north.
Alaskans living in ports of call along the Inside Passage cruise routes are very welcoming and generally very informed about the natural history of their area. Some offer local tours which can be part of the shore excursions in towns like Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway for cruise travelers. Visits to these Alaskan land bases provide an insight into the other faces of this incredible part of the world, including local native American communities.
The safe, calm, sheltered waters in this maritime passageway make this ideal cruise territory for even the most sensitive to motion sickness. It’s very unlikely that you will get seasick as movement is minimal on smaller cruise ships and hardly noticeable on larger liners. If you are easily affected by the motion of boats always book cabins on the outside where movement is less and you can see out! Come prepared with medication as a back-up but we doubt you will need this.
Wild life is abundant along very section of an Alaska Inside Passage cruise. Sea life is likely to include whales, especially humpbacks and harbor seals. On land black and brown bear, mountain goats, moose and deer can be seen across summer months and the area around Haines is home to largest concentration of bald eagles in the world. Don’t forget to take your binoculars!
Glacier Bay with its tidewater glacier viewing is often voted the highlight of a cruise along Alaska’s Inside Passage. This is an incredible experience but as you have read, travelers wise enough to take a trip like this, can expect more, much more and get hooked on this part of the world, as we did!
