Alaska is an ideal place to visit on a cruise. The scenery and wildlife are spectacular and much of this can be seen from the comfort of a deck chair. A number of different cruise companies offer Alaskan cruises and these start from different ports and feature different destinations. Alaskan cruise routes follow much of the coastline of Alaska and pass sights that need to be seen to be believed!
The best cruises follow the south eastern coast of the Alaska often beginning and ending in Seattle or Vancouver. Islands in the Marine Inland Passage there, are home to wildlife that includes bears and eagles. You can learn about the history of the different peoples of Alaska in Juneau the political capital of Alaska and in Ketchikan and Sitka. Glaciers abound around this part of Alaska on land and ad jutting into the ocean.
Anchorage is included on some cruise routes. It is an easily accessible city and a great place to visit as well as a place to prepare for the next leg of your vacation. The culture of Anchorage is influenced by the outdoors, Alaska’s wildlife and the local indigenous communities. It is well worth spending time there to explore aspects of this city.
Some Alaskan cruise routes feature the glaciers in the south of Alaska. The Glacier Bay, Hubbard Glacier and College Fjord are among the most popular of these glaciers to see around Alaska. These are included on the cruise routes that depart from Seward.
Alaskan cruise routes that travel the Inside Passage are one of the most incredible experiences for anyone visiting this part of the world. They pass by and accommodate stop at the islands on the south eastern part of Alaska. These routes are only included in some cruises but well worth investigating as you search for the cruise that best suits you. Most routes include the fishing town of Ketchikan where an extensive totem display is a highlight. Skagway located a little north of Juneau and Ketchikan is another popular stop on these cruise routes.
Only a few cruises include routes to the western part of the state including the Aleutian Islands because of its remoteness. This is reachable but generally by air via Anchorage or Fairbanks and often staying at Barrow the northern most town in Alaska. There is limited provision of this part of Alaska in cruise routes.
Each cruise route offers a different insight into this diverse and fascinating state. It’s just a matter of deciding which one you would like to take first!
