Well chosen Alaskan cruises destinations can mean finishing your cruise on a high and feeling like you want to start all over again. Destinations on an Alaskan cruise vacation don’t always just need to be popular cities. These can also include natural wonders and parts of Alaska that are really off the beaten track. These are many popular places to head towards on an Alaskan cruise vacation.
Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage is one of the best places to visit as part of your cruise vacation. This city’s suburbia is interspersed amongst large wooded areas that are home to a variety of wildlife. The city features a number of interesting places to visit during your time there. These include the Alaska Native Heritage Center, The Alaska Native Medical Hospital for exquisite local crafts and the Oscar Anderson House Museum. Here the social history display provides an appreciation of the impact of humankind on Alaska and the reverse!
Located in the popular Marine Inland Passage, Ketchikan is a destination worth heading for on your Alaskan cruise. It provides an insight into Alaska’s fishing industry and although very geared to accommodate the thousands of tourist who pass by each summer, it is also clearly a fishing town. Ketchikan is well known for its large collection of totem poles of many different sizes. A greater number of totem poles are on display in Ketchikan than in anywhere else in the world.
Juneau is Alaska’s state capital. Also located in the Marine Inland Passge on Gastineau Bay, it is spread along the side of nearby Mt Roberts. Juneau is close to the Juneau Icefield where a number of large glaciers are located. The Mendenhall Glacier, a glacier more than ten miles in length is a short local bus trip from the city center.
Glacier Bay is a spectacular part of Alaska to view from a ship on an Alaskan cruise vacation. A large number of glaciers flow from the extensive nearby mountain range in this south eastern part of the state and provide breathtaking scenery seen from a 65 mile long fjord. Glacier Bay is a marine and land wilderness sanctuary and because of its remoteness allows a large number of local species of wildlife to exist there.
College Fjord located near Prince William Sound features many glaciers, including the Amherst, Bryn Mawr, Harvard and Smith Glaciers all lined up next to each other. A spectacular and interesting destination on an Alaskan cruise vacation, College Fjord was at the center of the largest earthquake ever recorded in the US on Good Friday in 1964.
There are many Alaskan cruise destinations that are well worth visiting during an Alaskan cruise vacation. These interesting towns and places each reflect Alaska’s frontier character and are always feature a backdrop of snow capped mountains. They are some of the most memorable places to visit when on a cruise in the most northern state in the US.
